📄 Additional Notification Details & Guidelines

Power Grid Corporation of India Limited, the Maharatna public sector company that carries roughly half of the power generated in India across its transmission network, has opened the application window for its Engineer Trainee recruitment for 2026. The vacancy notice dated 3 November 2026 fixes the number of posts at 319, and online applications run from 3 November 2026 at 5:00 PM to 18 November 2026 at 11:59 PM through the careers section of powergrid.in. There is no separate written examination in this recruitment. Selection rests on the candidate’s GATE 2026 score, followed by a group discussion and a personal interview.

This is a short window — about two weeks — and it is also a GATE-gated window. Only a valid GATE 2026 score in the matching paper counts. A GATE 2025 score, or any older score, does not make a candidate eligible, however strong it may be. Candidates who appeared for GATE 2026 in Electrical, Civil or Computer Science and hold the prescribed engineering degree should therefore check the discipline-wise break-up first, confirm that their branch matches the accepted list, and then apply well before the last evening, when portal traffic is usually heaviest.

PGCIL Engineer Trainee Vacancy Details 2026

The vacancy notice dated 3 November 2026 announces 319 Engineer Trainee posts in three disciplines. Electrical takes the largest share by far, with 250 posts, followed by Civil with 48 and Computer Science with 21.

The category-wise total reported for the 319 posts is 126 UR, 91 OBC (NCL), 50 SC, 22 ST and 30 EWS, which adds up to 319. For Electrical alone, the reported split is 98 UR, 72 OBC (NCL), 38 SC, 18 ST and 24 EWS, adding up to 250. Reservation for OBC (NCL), EWS, SC, ST and PwBD candidates applies as per Government of India rules, and candidates should read the category-wise break-up on powergrid.in before choosing their category in the form, since the vacancy notice itself is the final word if any tracker summary differs from it.

One point needs care. The original detailed advertisement, CC/04/2025 dated 27 September 2025, had listed Electronics as a tentative discipline. The vacancy notice dated 3 November 2026 lists posts only in Electrical, Civil and Computer Science, and no Electronics posts. Electronics (GATE paper EC) candidates should therefore check the POWERGRID careers page before spending time on a form, rather than assuming an Electronics vacancy exists in this round.

Group discussion and interviewTo be announced

The group discussion and interview dates have not been announced yet. Shortlisting for those stages is category-wise, based on GATE 2026 normalised marks, so the GD and interview schedule will follow only after applications close and scores are processed.

Eligibility: Qualification and GATE Paper

Applicants need a full-time B.E., B.Tech or B.Sc (Engineering) degree from a recognised university or institute, with at least 60 percent marks or an equivalent CGPA. For SC, ST and PwBD candidates applying against reserved posts, the requirement is relaxed to pass marks. The accepted branches and the matching GATE 2026 paper are as follows.

DisciplineAccepted degree branchesGATE 2026 paper
ElectricalElectrical, Electrical (Power), Electrical and Electronics, Power Systems Engineering, Power Engineering (Electrical)EE
CivilCivil EngineeringCE
Computer ScienceComputer Science, Computer Engineering, Information TechnologyCS

CGPA is converted to percentage as per the university’s own rule. Where no rule exists, the conversion is CGPA divided by the maximum CGPA, multiplied by 100. Candidates working in government organisations or public sector undertakings must produce a No Objection Certificate at the interview stage. Candidates who want to pursue higher studies on the basis of their GATE 2026 score, or who need extra time before joining, are advised in the notice not to apply, since this recruitment is for immediate trainee intake.

Age Limit and Relaxation

The detailed advertisement gives an upper age limit of 28 years as on 31 December 2025, and candidates must also be at least 18 years old. Age relaxation applies as follows: 3 years for OBC (NCL), 5 years for SC and ST, 10 years for PwBD (UR and EWS), 13 years for PwBD (OBC-NCL) and 15 years for PwBD (SC and ST). Ex-servicemen and riot victims get relaxation as per Government of India rules. Category relaxation applies only to posts reserved for that category. Because the detailed advertisement predates the vacancy notice, candidates should verify on powergrid.in whether the age cut-off date has been revised in the latest notice before applying.

Application Fee

CategoryFee
General, OBC (NCL), EWSRs. 500
SC, ST, PwBD, Ex-servicemen, DepartmentalNil

The fee is paid online after logging in to the candidate section, and it is non-refundable. An application is treated as complete only after the fee is paid, where the fee applies.

Salary, Training and Service Bond

During the one-year training period, an Engineer Trainee gets basic pay of Rs. 40,000 in the IDA scale of Rs. 40,000 to Rs. 1,40,000, with an approximate CTC of Rs. 11 lakh per year. Trainees also get IDA, HRA and perks at 12 percent of basic pay during training. After successful training, the officer is regularised as Engineer in the E2 scale of Rs. 50,000 to Rs. 1,60,000, with an approximate CTC of about Rs. 22.5 lakh per year. The regular package includes dearness allowance, cafeteria perks, performance related pay, company accommodation or HRA, conveyance and digital reimbursement, laptop, provident fund, gratuity, pension, leave encashment, group insurance and medical facilities, with the exact CTC varying by place of posting.

Selected candidates must sign a bond to complete the training and then serve POWERGRID for at least three years. The bond amount is Rs. 5,00,000 for General, OBC (NCL) and EWS candidates and Rs. 2,50,000 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates. Posting can be anywhere in India or abroad, though most postings are at project and site locations, so applicants should be ready for site-based work rather than expecting a headquarters posting.

Selection Process and Exam Pattern

There is no separate written test conducted by POWERGRID. The selection weightage is: GATE 2026 marks, out of 100 and normalised, in the matching paper — 85 percent; group discussion — 3 percent; personal interview — 12 percent; total 100 percent. Shortlisted candidates may also take a psychometric assessment, which is used as an input in the interview rather than as a separately scored stage.

The group discussion carries no qualifying marks. The interview must be qualified: 40 percent for UR and EWS candidates and 30 percent for OBC (NCL), SC, ST and PwBD candidates applying for reserved posts. The group discussion and interview can be taken in Hindi or English. If two candidates score equal marks, the older candidate is placed higher. Final appointment depends on passing the pre-employment medical examination.

Documents Required

Candidates should keep ready: GATE 2026 admit card and score card; GATE 2026 application number and registration number; B.E. or B.Tech mark sheets and degree certificate; CGPA-to-percentage conversion certificate if applicable; OBC (NCL) certificate issued on or after 1 April 2025 in the Central Government format; EWS Income and Asset Certificate for the relevant financial year, issued on or after 1 April 2025; SC or ST certificate in the Central Government format; PwBD medical certificate and UDID card if applicable; and a No Objection Certificate if employed in government or a public sector undertaking.
