Vacancies are tentative and may increase or decrease, and unfilled vacancies in one discipline or category may be transferred to another at ITBPF discretion. These vacancies are not open to physically challenged persons or ex-servicemen.
Eligibility Criteria
Educational qualification is Matriculation (Class 10) or its equivalent from a recognised board. Nationality must be Indian citizenship, or subject of Nepal or Bhutan, as per the notification. The sports qualification is the heart of this recruitment: candidates must have participated in, or won medals at, a recognised level of competition — International, National, Inter-University, Khelo India Games and similar tiers — between 1 January 2024 and 1 November 2026. All required educational and sports certificates must be in hand on the date of recruitment; candidates without them are not eligible. Certificates from boards other than Central or State Boards must be accompanied by a Government notification declaring equivalence for Central Government service.

The OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) certificate must have been obtained within three years before the closing date of 1 November 2026. Date of birth is finalised on the basis of the Matriculation or Higher Secondary certificate submitted, and no later change request is considered.

Weight must be proportionate to height and age as per the medical standards chart. Minimum distance vision is 6/6 and 6/9 in both eyes without correction — glasses or lenses are not permitted — and colour vision is tested by the CP III (Ishihara) test; colour-blind candidates are not eligible. Knock-knees, flat foot, varicose veins and squint are disqualifying. Tattoos are permitted only for religious symbols, figures or names, on the inner aspect of the left forearm or the dorsum of the hands, and sized under one-fourth of that body part.
Pay Scale and Allowances
The post carries Pay Level-3 of the 7th Central Pay Commission: Rs. 21,700 to Rs. 69,100 per month, plus Dearness Allowance, Ration Money, Washing Allowance, Special Compensatory Allowance for border postings, free uniform, free accommodation or House Rent Allowance, Transport Allowance, free Leave Pass, free medical facilities and other admissible allowances. Pension is under the New Restructured Defined Contributory Pension Scheme in force from 1 January 2004.
Selection Process and Sports Achievement Marks
Selection follows this sequence: Documentation, then Physical Standard Test (PST), then a Sports Trial Test (qualifying in nature), then a Merit List based on sports achievement marks, then Detailed Medical Examination (DME), and Review Medical Examination (RME) if required. There is no written examination. The Sports Trial Test carries 40 marks, is qualifying only, and needs a minimum of 20 marks; it does not count towards final merit. Candidates who represented India in an international sports event with Department of Sports clearance are exempt from the trial. No appeal is entertained for re-conduct of the Sports Trial Test.
Final merit is based purely on the sports achievement marking scheme — documentation, PST and trial marks are used only for shortlisting and qualifying. Selected rows of the marking scheme:
| Competition | Gold | Silver | Bronze | Participation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Olympic Games (Summer and Winter) | 100 | 92 | 84 | 75 |
| Asian Games | 85 | 77 | 69 | 60 |
| Commonwealth Games | 80 | 72 | 64 | 55 |
| World Championship / World Cup (Annual) | 70 | 62 | 54 | 45 |
| National Games / Senior National Championship | 30 | 22 | 17 | Not eligible |
| Junior National Championship | 25 | 18 | 15 | Not eligible |
| Inter-University / Khelo India University Games | 20 | 13 | 11 | Not eligible |
| Khelo India Youth / Winter Games | 15 | 12 | 10 | Not eligible |
The official notification lists 18 competition tiers in total. Candidates get marks for only their single highest medal or participation secured in the 1 January 2024 to 1 November 2026 window. Tie-break order: higher marks first, then higher national-competition achievement if international achievements are equal, then the younger candidate, then alphabetical order of name in English.
